2008 CORO Conference – Darwin, Northern Territory
The 2008 CORO conference was held in June and included a focus on practical and legislative issues and harmonization initiatives. The Conference featured a plenary session on Anti-Money Laundering as well as keynote addresses by Richard Ackland, Legal Commentator and editor of Justinian and The Hon. Justice Dean Mildren RFD on the respective roles of the judiciary and the relevant regulatory bodies in relation to the discipline of practitioners.
2007 CORO Conference – Brisbane, Queensland
The 2007 conference was held in October and included a range of diverse speakers such as The Hon. Justice Margaret McMurdo AC of the Queensland Court of Appeal; Dr Christine Parker, Associate Professor and Reader, University of Melbourne Law School; Professor Jeff Giddings, Deputy Dean (Learning & Teaching) and Program Convenor for the Graduate Certificate in Dispute Resolution at Griffith University; Hedley Thomas, Senior Writer, The Australian and Randal Dennings, Partner, Clayton Utz.
The conference featured several plenary sessions focusing on issues such as developments in relation to incorporated legal practices (ILPs) and a discussion exploring the concept of unsatisfactory professional conduct. The plenary session exploring the concept of unsatisfactory professional conduct used the interesting format of a hypothetical run by Damien Carrick, presenter of The Law Report on Radio National, with a distinguished panel of commentators.
2006 CORO Conference – Sydney, New South Wales
The 2007 Conference was held in November and included three key speakers, Mr John Walker, Managing Director of IMF, an ASX listed Litigation Fund Manager who discussed litigation funding; Mr Julian Talbot, an international Risk Management Consultant who discussed risk profiling as a regulatory tool and Professor Stephen Colbran, Head of the School of Law at the University of New England, Armidale who discussed the role of legal education in the regulatory process.
2005 CORO Conference – Adelaide, South Australia
The 2005 Conference was held in Adelaide from 17-18 November 2005. The Conference included discussions about the introduction of the National Profession Model Bill in a majority of States and mechanisms to facilitate the national framework. To meet the needs of a national legal services market, CORO developed and adopted protocols for information exchange and complaint handling between regulatory authorities at the 2005 Confrerence. During the Conference it was agreed that the New South Wales model of regulating incorporated legal practices through the self-assessment process and the ten point plan would be adopted Australia wide.
2004 CORO Conference – Auckland, New Zealand
The 2004 Conference which were held in New Zealand featured a diverse programme. The programme included a session on the National Legal Profession Model Laws Project, as well as plenary sessions on Managing investigative workloads and performance indicators for complaints handling. The Conference also featured a joint session with IILACE on self-regulation of the legal profession around the world and a session on the establishment for a national training forum for inspectors and trust account regulatory officers.
2003 CORO Conference – Melbourne Victoria
The 2003 Conference was held in Melbourne over two days. The Conference included the annual update on the state of play in each jurisdiction in Australia as well as sessions on “no win no fee/cold calling” and the regulation of non-practitioner employees in legal practice. The Conference also included sessions on a proposed national legal services market protocol and an information exchange protocol.
